About the event
Our Little Hour: A Musical Drama Based on the Life of Walter Tull
Book & Lyrics by Dougie Blaxland | Original Score by Chris Anthony
Starring Neil Reidman (Dr Who, Casualty, Eastenders, The Detectorists, The Level)
Experience the inspirational story of Walter Tull, a pioneering hero, in a new musical drama. Written by award-winning playwright Dougie Blaxland and composer Chris Anthony, “Our Little Hour” brings to life the journey of Walter Tull, the grandson of a Barbadian slave, who overcame incredible odds.
Walter Tull was the first black footballer to play at the highest level in the UK. He also became the first black officer in the British Army. Tragically, he was killed in action just weeks before the end of World War I. His legacy lives on in British history and in the hearts of those who know his story.
Playwright, Dougie Blaxland, described Our Little Hour as “a celebration of the life of an extraordinary man whose pioneering spirit continues to inspire the campaign for justice and equality. It is also deeply fitting that the production which will be staged throughout Black History Month and honour the memory of one of the most significant figures in British sporting and military history.”
Combining powerful drama with haunting music, “Our Little Hour” follows the success of Blaxland’s previous hit, “On The Ropes,” which had a sell-out run in London.
Dougie Blaxland’s work has been widely recognized, including winning the 2021 National Campaign for the Arts Best Arts Project award for “N17.” His stage play “Unknown” was listed among The Guardian readers’ favorite theatre of 2020.
Paul Kearns, Director of Operations at Show Racism the Red Card, believes that the production “tells a really important story which will help to reinforce the work that we are doing to combat racism by engaging new audiences in a celebration of Walter Tull’s pioneering contribution to British society.”
