About the event

Dame Darcey Bussell comes to Portsmouth in first ever Diverse Dance Mix School Summer Competition!

In its inaugural year over 5,000 school pupils from up and down the country have signed up to take part in a brand-new dance and fitness school competition hosted by Diverse Dance Mix (DDMIX) and none other than former prima ballerina and TV star Dame Darcey Bussell DBE.

The UK wide initiative, supported locally by Portsmouth City Council and the New Theatre Royal, aims to engage children in creativity, culture, fitness and dance to address a generation where screen time often supersedes fitness time.

13 Portsmouth schools have been chosen to take part in the regional final taking place on Saturday 8th June in one of Portsmouth’s historic buildings located in the heart of this historic city:

  • St George’s Beneficial C of E Primary
  • Fernhurst Junior
  • Solent Junior
  • Beacon View Primary Academy
  • St. Paul’s Catholic Primary
  • Isambard Brunel Junior School
  • St Swithun’s Catholic Primary
  • Copnor Primary
  • Lyndhurst Junior School
  • Mayville High School
  • Highbury Primary
  • The Flying Bull Academy
  • St Edmunds Catholic School

Pupils from years 3 to 7 (aged 7 to 12) are taking part, and these schools have been invited to St George’s Hall, where they will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform their DDMIX routine in front of Dame Darcey and a live audience for a chance to be crowned the overall regional winner!

The final will also see performances from specially invited guests including Britain’s Got Talent star, the mesmerising illusionist and magician, MADDOX, who will entertain the crowd with his unique talent, as well as the Magic Circle’s Wayne Fox.

Commenting on the forthcoming event in Portsmouth, Dame Darcey, said: “I’m delighted to work with schools across the country during this exciting competition, promoting health and fitness through dance. Best of luck to you all!”

The UK competition tour, conceived and presented by Purple Shows Limited, includes seven regional finals May to July 2019 in Salisbury, Liverpool, Portsmouth, Newcastle, Aylesbury, Cardiff and Aberdeen.
