About the event

A physical, gothic retelling of the Dickens novel by master theatre maker David Glass.

In a dark and dismal Victorian London, orphaned Esther Summerson is searching for her family while the icy Lady Dedlock is nursing a dark secret about her past. Esther moves to Bleak House when she is taken into the care of the generous Mr Jarndyce, but her mysterious connection to Lady Deadlock threatens to ruin them both.

Perhaps one of Dickens’ greatest achievements, Bleak House is a deeply affecting production about love, power, poverty and choice, set against a brutal legal system hell bent on destroying those beneath it.

Dickens’ novel is now boldly re-imaged by master theatre maker David Glass in a visceral and brilliantly choreographed retelling of the melodrama in an adaptation that confronts and challenges.

“The sheer squalor of Victorian London, seething under the hypocrisy of a labyrinthine legal system and corruption on a grand scale, is evoked with often visceral power.” – The Fine Times Recorder on Bleak House
