Jump Start is a partnership formed by New Theatre Royal, Aspex Art Gallery and the Portsmouth Cultural Trust, to develop talent and enthusiasm for the arts in schools across Portsmouth and Hampshire.

The initiative is funded by Artswork and offers a wide range of free workshops and activities in schools, together with subsidised special events, visits and performances to enhance the curriculum and support learning of the arts.

Aimed at secondary schools and their associated feeder schools, we offer workshops and teach-ins covering a wide range of art forms including music, drama, visual arts, photography, film and dance.

The workshops not only explore music, visual arts and theatre but also involve film animation, carnival, creative writing, design and technical theatre. Experienced, professional artists who specialise in working with school children conduct all our workshops.

Since the project started in September 2014, Jump Start has worked with 1,300 pupils in over 30 primary and secondary schools across Hampshire, including schools in Gosport, Stubbington, Hayling Island and Cowplain as well as Portsmouth.

The scheme saw pupils from Cowplain Community School work alongside Filskit Theatre Company to create two performances based on literature from their school reading list and perform them for their local primary schools.

Similarly, King Richard School in Portsmouth designed and created three panels with a graffiti artist to celebrate their new school’s house system.

Upcoming projects include Leesland School pupils designing and making costumes for their special production of ‘The Tempest’ as well as a project with five secondary schools who will be creating an interactive, digital installation to be presented in the Minghella Theatre for Portsmouth Festivities.
