The people of Loxford have a problem, they need to find a 'suitable' girl to be their May Queen but there are no 'suitable' girls to be found! Albert is odd, timid, tied to his mother's apron-strings but above all, a greengrocer.

Benjamin Britten's quintessentially English comedy is a romp that pokes fun at the English condition in the most tender way ; 'Some Mothers do 'ave 'em' meets 'Open all Hours' with a hint of Gilbert and Sullivan thrown in for good measure.
