The New Theatre Royal and 93.7 Express FM collaborated on an exciting creative oral history project called Living Memories from December 2009 to March 2010, funded by the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills and the Transformation Fund.
The Project
Our aim was to collect memories from the people of Portsmouth about the city and the New Theatre Royal’s rich history. These memories were then used to form the basis of Portsmouth’s very own radio soap broadcast on Express FM and also to act as inspiration for a live performance at the theatre, which took place on 29 March 2010.
Performers and learners from across the city brought the memories to life through dance, theatre, music, poetry, textiles and creative writing. The memories of the theatre will later be used in the forthcoming redevelopment of the theatre as part of a multimedia, interactive Living Memories wall.
Over the course of the project many people took part in workshops including music and dance, memory quilt making, oral history collection, scriptwriting, directing and computer graphics and performed at the final showcase.
We still welcome memories of the theatre, email them over to hello@newtheatreroyal.com and be part of our Living Memories wall.
